NW Hills Remodel
Remodel
This project is a full gut remodel of a generationally owned NW Austin house. To repurpose the house for the needs of its growing young family, the design would call for more space and general modernization. While much of the existing framing was preserved, the bathrooms were re-configured and ceiling heights were adjusted. Square footage created by the addition was used for more transformative features including a contemporary open-plan kitchen and dining space. Windows, doors, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems were all fully updated. Walls and ceilings were insulated with full-cavity open-cell spray foam. A new roof was installed with a soffit notch to accommodate the sway of a Heritage Live Oak tree branch overhanging the roof.
The interior finishes reflect the mindset of its well travelled European owners – modern, clean-lined and minimalist. The neutral color palette inside allows the owners collection of internationally curated belongings, from rugs to special antiques and art, to add the perfect touch of warmth. Some of our favorite details of the project are the owner and builder designed living room shelf unit with LED accent lighting, and special designer sourced dining fixture that occupies the volume above the dining table. The crown jewel of the project are the steel framed trap window and gliding door walls that connect the kitchen and dining area to the back yard deck, pool, and mature oak trees.
