Feather House
New Construction
The Feather House is a single-family residence achieving simultaneous project goals of modern design, environmental sensitivity, high performance construction, and a program to support extended stay guests. The house is approached by a lengthy pervious paver driveway that winds front to back through a densely treed property. The large lot allowed the house to be set back from the street and sited for privacy. Feather house is a set of three interconnected buildings; the primary volume is a linear massing that contains master and guest suites separated by the main common spaces. To the West a Porte-cochere connects the main volume to the garage. To the East, a covered screen porch connects to a secondary dwelling unit. Strong relationships to the outdoors exist in each building through expansive glazing and direct access to outdoor living.
A minimalist restraint is evident in the design and details; architectural steel & concrete, flush baseboards, smooth wall finishes, and a neutral color palette. Stained horizontal grain walnut interior doors and cabinetry add contrast, beauty and warmth throughout the home. Special features of the project include a smooth stone clad parapet wall that links the three buildings, solar power generation, rainwater collection, and a lap pool. The kitchen breaks from tradition and eliminates all recessed lights and pendants in favor of a custom designed geometric LED mud-in array and linear mud-in LED bars over each sink. Custom lighting, custom furniture and unique tile and plaster finishes add the perfect finishing touches to each interior space.
