Butterfly House
New Construction
This Central Austin new build assumes a low profile tucked below street level on a heavily treed site. In a neighborhood where tear downs more commonly give way to imposing McMansions, this house seeks camouflage. A defining feature on the front elevation is the butterfly roof detail. But the project name also nods to the fact that new wildflower plantings attract Butterflies during migration periods by the hundreds. The homeowners are avid gardeners and have worked long and hard to restore native vegetation. The site features a large capacity galvanized rainwater collection system and a working vegetable garden. Perhaps the signature outdoor feature is a fully screened outdoor living area and lap pool. From systems and finishes, to special window shade awnings fabricated with galvanized pipe supports, design and construction details mindful of the project’s green building objective are ever present.
